A planet
that won't
hold still.

Earthrise News covers the ground, the ocean, and the sky above it — discovery and change on a moving planet. The desk's first live wire, Alerts, publishes automatically when a real earthquake clears the desk's live threshold. Land, Sea, and Sky coverage is in production now.

What's surfacing from the ocean beat — expeditions, marine science, and what the deep gives up.

How a bulletin fires

The rundown — same sequence, every event, no exceptions.
A1

Detect

The desk polls the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program feed every 60 seconds and records anything magnitude 4.0 or larger.

A2

Triage

Every new event is stamped with a decision within the minute — most are logged and left alone; only a qualifying magnitude moves forward.

A3

Claim

The live policy decides which events are claimed for bulletins, with daily and quiet-window safeguards.

A4

Render

The bulletin builds itself: a cover card, the USGS ShakeMap intensity image, and a short read in one of four rotating voices — never the same voice twice in a row.

A5

Publish

The video uploads to the channel and archives to storage with full source credit — usually inside half an hour of the ground moving.

Reading the alert level

USGS PAGER — the color on every bulletin means the same thing, every time.
